Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Co. is sportswear company in Philadelphia, Pa., established in 1904 and is the oldest sporting goods company in Philadelphia. Through licensing agreements with Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League and the Collegiate Licensing Company are responsible of authentic vintage sports jerseys, jackets, wool felt hats and pennants. The store is a landmark destination for professional athletes, sports and celebrities who visit the city. The store is located at 1318 Chestnut Street in downtown Philadelphia.

Company History
Sporting Goods & Mitchell Ness opened in Philadelphia in 1904. Frank P. Mitchell, a former tennis AAU wrestling champion, and Charles M. Ness, an avid golfer born in Scotland, together founded Mitchell & Ness Sporting in 1904. His original shop made and hand-strung tennis racquets, and with wood imported from Scotland, custom built golf clubs. With the time, have expanded their business, selling uniforms for local baseball and football teams. When the Philadelphia Eagles went to the young National Football League in 1933, M & N provided the team jerseys and equipment. Mitchell & Ness Eagles' team followed up the 1963 season.
The first time the Mitchell & Ness tag appeared in a major league baseball uniform Athletics Philadelphia was in 1938. In the 1940s, M & N began to supply other major Philadelphia team league baseball for the Phillies. At the end of the decade, the Mitchell & Ness tag appeared in high school and uniforms varsity throughout the Philadelphia area.
In late 1970, Mitchell & Ness has decreased equipment business to concentrate on its retail operation. The store became a major outlet for the hockey team and ski team.
Mitchell & Ness almost went bankrupt in 1983. Owner Peter Capolino told the Detroit Free Press, "In 1983 all the exposure we had done was gone to hell. I fired 100 people, closed two stores. Cut in company to a small store at 13th and Walnut Street (in Philadelphia). Was reduced to just me and my wife. "
In 1985, a customer entered the shop and asked if M & N could repair his 1960 pirate game vest used, and its 1949 game-used St. Louis Browns shirt. The two were made of wool flannel, like all baseball uniforms had been. Mitchell & Ness found that he could do, and with the awareness that M & N is capable of this task, born of an idea: wool reproduce historically accurate uniforms, baseball flannel.
Mitchell & Ness hired history buffs and sports gurus. They dug through old newspapers, magazines, books, programs and old movies. They consulted vintage uniform collection across the country and visited the archives in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Major League Baseball teams had stopped wearing wool flannel shirts in 1972. The teams now use double-knit shirts Polyester. Dust in a warehouse in North Philadelphia, Mitchell & Ness discovered reels of old flannel baseball 50 years earlier. They were still carefully wrapped, untouched and as new condition ready to be cut and sewn.
The flannel was sewn. The letters and patches are recreated and implemented. The shirts were completed, and were offered for sale. T-shirts began to sell most of the night. So did the second batch of a dozen or more. Eventually, Mitchell & Ness attracted customers across America. Sports Illustrated, wrote a flattering M & N, in June 1987. The New York Times wrote about the company two years later.
