Why New York is a city of Baseball

It is true that football, basketball and hockey have their fans, but the sporting year begins in February and ends in October – preferably in late October. And even for another three and a half months, the hot stove league consumes the conscience of the city, even beating out the Jets and Giants playoff races.

This love for the game of baseball dates of all forms in the 19th century as baseball was played in New York in their more primitive forms. The birth of the National League in 1876, eventually brought the City of Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants when the American League and moved to 1901, New York Yankees shopping soon.

Encouraging a baseball team in New York was not about which team was better, was a birthright absolute. Persons born in a fan base and there was no change of ends. As the Yankees were set, his fans came from the Bronx and also attracted business visitors and tourists.

The Dodgers and Giants were different. Of the working class, blue collar fans in the first half of the 20th century tended to back one of two teams National League. Giants fans were generally of Manhattan, while the largest township in the city were his beloved Dodgers. As the class system of early 19th century, people had broken down by nationality and religion, New Yorkers were identified with the teams that followed.

The best example of that came in 1951, where the Dodgers and Giants finished the season tied after 154 games. In three playoff games, was ordered by the National League, culminating with "were heard around the world, "Giants Bobby Thompson. Fans fought other and to this day fans old Brooklyn Dodgers still feel the pain.

After winning the giant, proceeded to be swept by the Yankees, who had a talented young mantle of Mickey in the gardens.

The Dodgers had once in 1955, giving Brooklyn its only championship, but the days of The Boys of Summer ended two years later, when the Bums and the Giants came and went to the West Coast.

With a single team in the city, fans of the Dodgers and Giants left behind did not back to the Yankees, but followed their remote equipment or stopped watching all together. Only when the New York Mets was formed in 1962, has rejected these New Yorkers to find a team.

As its predecessors, the Amazins' quickly established themselves as a team. Despite that were inept, fans flocked to the old Polo grounds – And finally, the Shea Stadium – to see the Mets and root against the Dodgers and the Giants when they reached the city.

The Yankees, meanwhile, just kept winning. Champions in 1961 and 1962, lost the Fall Classic for the next two years. Then the bottom fell out. They finished near the bottom or last for the rest of the decade, as the equipment aged and the powerful farm system was barren.

That gave the Mets Amazing opportunity to take the city. And in 1969 won the World Series against insurmountable odds. Led by young pitchers like Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, the Mets won their first miracle of the series 4-1 to the Orioles Baltimore.

They stayed in contention for the next seven years, but never returned to the top.

The Yankees surged after George Steinbrenner bought the team and through free agency built in 1977 and 1978 champions. But the hands of the Chief eventually cost approach because too many bad moves the Bombers.

As the Yankees fell, the Mets returned and in 1986 won the series again, beating the Boston Red Sox in seven games. Like the generation equipment earlier, these were the Mets of competition until 1991 but never won the big game.

But as before, when the Mets collapsed, the Yankees made the forefront. This time he won four crowns in five years (1996, 1998-2000). Unlike previous teams, these bombers were built from the inside, while happy that the collection of the talents of others through free agency and trades. Led by future Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, the bombers are still a force in the American League.

The Mets enjoyed a resurgence in 1999 with the controversial manager Bobby Valentine and catcher Mike Piazza. They even the series in 2000, only to lose to the Yankees Cross City. Then, after five years of mediocrity, the Mets again in 2006 behind young stars, David Wright and Jose Reyes was a strike of the World Series, losing to eventual champion St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

What makes baseball in New York, only these days is the rivalry between the Mets and Yankees. The teams do not face each other in the third exhibition games until 1997 and the Series Subway is the highlight of each season. Both Shea and Yankee stadiums gets a mixed crowd, but behaved as the two teams play each other. Since both the Met and Yankees fans root for their teams, you can hear the songs of both clubs return for all nine innings.

And that is unlike any other sport in the city. Hockey games are often the most violent explosions in the stands, while games between the Knicks and the Nets and the Jets vs. Giants game could play anywhere, as the intensity just is not there in comparison.

And that's why New York, first and foremost, is a city baseball.
